A group of eight people in conversation
This drawing shows a group of eight male and female figures in lively conversation. The men are wearing hats and breeches, an indication that this may be burghers rather than peasants.
The unsigned drawing is inscribed on the back in pencil: 'A V Velde'. It has been tentatively dated to 1655 based on the comparison to studies by Willem van de Velde, the Elder made in preparation for grisailles with groups of figures in the foreground.
