A boat taking a line from a ship to a dolphin
This drawing belongs to a group of compositional studies that combine pencil drawing with a loose, light wash. In the right foreground two men in a boat tie a line, leading from a small ship in the middle distance, to a wooden mooring, or dolphin. Another rowing boat approaches the ship as other vessels lie becalmed in the distance.
The drawing is inscribed twice in the sky: ‘L’ to indicate the direction of the light.
