A kaag ashore with ships at anchor in the distance

A compositional study of a shoreline at low tide, created with successive layers of wash. In the middle-distance is a starboard view of a kaag on a mudbank, with a lone figure approaching on foot from the left. Four ships lie at anchor in the distance.

This drawing may be a contemporary copy, or even a later imitation of a work by Willem Van de Velde, the Younger. It is inscribed at a later date, or with a false signature: ‘W.V.V.’.
