A rocky Mediterranean coast
A coastal scene in the manner of Van de Velde, the Elder, depicting an inlet between high rocks with some buildings, possibly a fort, in the middle distance. To the right, a lateen-rigged vessel is coming ashore as another small boat, faintly sketched, rests in the inlet. For a similar coastal scene by the same hand, see PAE5252. Inscribed in ink on the reverse ‘euerding 3 stuk’ (Everdingen 3 drawings), recording an earlier (and unlikely) attribution to Allart van Everdingen.
