Dutch ships at anchor near the shore
Seven ships at anchor in the middle-distance. The flags indicate the presence of an admiral and vice-admiral among the left-hand group of ships, and a rear-admiral among those on the right. The buildings of a small town are visible in the distance. In this study the artist has paid more-than-usual attention to the setting of the ships within the landscape, using the wash to explore the play of light against the sea and sky.
