A starboard bow view of a flute, probably a Dutch merchant vessel, in a light breeze. Unusually, the sails (specifically the fore course, mizzen and fore and main topsails) are indicated by the blank paper against a lightly washed, darker sky, apparently without any drawing. A smaller, single-sail vessel attends the scene on the flute’s port bow
