A ship dismasted in a heavy sea
One of several expressive and violent storm scenes that Van de Velde, the Younger, devised in his later years, this drawing shows a tumultuous scene of impending shipwreck. On the left is a ship dipping into a wave, its foremast having already been lost. In the middle distance hidden but for its masts, another ship attempts to ride to the wind with sails furled.
