A Dutch pink in a heavy sea
This line drawing shows a pink (a small, square-rigged vessel commonly used at the time for fishing) negotiating a heavy sea. Two other pinks and a larger ship at anchor feature in the distance. The efficiency with which the artist indicates the form and lilt of the oncoming vessel betrays that years of experience that the artist, by then in his seventies, had accrued.
The drawing is inscribed on the reverse, upper left: ‘W.V.V J 1705’.
