A calm: galliots and a ship at anchor
Dating from around 1700, the composition of this drawing contains elements that characterize the calms painted by van de Velde and his studio late in his career. The style of drawing is comparatively relaxed and loose. On the right a broadside view of a galliot at anchor, topsail and topgallant loosed, with two others beyond. On the left there are fishermen in a boat trawling a net, and in the left middle-distance a ship with sails loosed.
