Ships becalmed
The detailed observation of a ship’s rigging provides the main focus for this compositional sketch of a ‘calm’ harbour scene. On the left is a port quarter view of a ship flying a pendant, with mizzen and main topsail loosed, and fore topsail half-mast high. Several smaller boats surround the ship as, to the right, a flagship fires a salute.
