A study in the lighting of an arm
It is the distinctive shorthand annotations ‘L’ and ‘b’ which have led to the attribution of this otherwise uncharacteristic drawing to Willem Van de Velde, the Younger. With these letters, and a few cross-hatched lines, the artist attempts to convey the effect of light on the forearm of a figure against a dark background.
