'Action between the Agamemnon and the Ca Ira'
The third of a group of 11 designs for wood-engravings (from 32 that Foster did) to illustrate the 1854 edition of Southey's 'Life of Nelson' published by David Bogue, London. The others, not all in necessarily finished form and not in chronological order, are PAE5373-PAE5383. This one formed the title illustration to Chapter II on p. 75 and is of Admiral William (Lord) Hotham's action off Genoa on 14 March 1795, in which the French 84-gun ship 'Ca Ira' -which lost her fore and main topmasts by collision in the preceding chase and was under tow by the 'Censeur' - took a pounding from the frigate 'Inconstant' (Thomas Fremantle) shortly aided by the 'Captain' and 'Agamemnon' (Horatio Nelson), though the last had to retreat when other French ships came up. The assault was renewed by the British the following morning and both ships were captured, with a prize crew being sent aboard by 'Agamemnon'. The 'Ca Ira' was taken into the Navy but was too badly damaged for use beyond that of a hospital ship in San Fiorenzo Bay (St Florent), Corsica, during British occupation of the island, 1794-96: she was burnt there in 1796 by accident. It is likely that 'Censeur' and the partly dismasted 'Ca Ira' are the ships on the left: the figure '64' presumably identifies Nelson's 'Agamemnon' in the context for which the drawing was intended. The identifying inscriptions may not be by the artist. Other images in the edition were done by Edward Duncan (10) or reproduced pictures by Richard Westall, Sir Thomas Lawrence and other uncredited but mostly identifiable sources. The title here is as published. For Foster's full contributions to the edition see PAE5373. [PvdM 9/15]
