Portrait of Lord Nelson, head and naval collar, in profile.... inscribed with the initials H.N. below
A portrait head of Nelson in profile to the left, wearing a naval collar. On the back it bears the inscription, ‘Sketch of Horace made by his sisters at Hillborough, given by Katherin Knyvet Wilson to FKS’. However it bears a very close resemblance to the pencil sketch of Nelson made by Simon de Koster in 1800 and the associated vignette by James Stow after de Koster’s drawing. It may therefore be a copy from that rather than from the life.
Nelson had three sisters, Susannah, Ann and Catherine. Susannah certainly owned an unfinished head-and-shoulders portrait of Nelson done for her by de Koster, and dated 8 December 1800 (BHC2900). A number of artists subsequently engraved the portrait, one version being used for the image on medallions and brooches manufactured after Trafalgar.
