Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich display label for cat-o'-nine tails numbered TOA0069 and TOA0068. The label is rectangular, painted black with the writing and border detailed in gold.
The painted inscription reads: 'Cat o'nine tails. / Two types of the "Cat" were used on board ship. / 1. Without knots. This was for the infliction of / punishment for offences other than theft. / 2. With knots. This was for the inflicition of / punishment for theft, which was considered to be / a very serious offence. The handles were covered / with red baize so as not to show the blood. / Presented by Lieut. G. Hunt, M.B.E., R.N., Curator.'
