A view looking forward of the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) at sea. The photographer is standing on the starboard side aft of the main mast looking forward and slightly to port. A partial view of the main mast and aft deckhouse are in the foreground on the left hand side. A white lifeboat covered with a green tarpaulins is fastened in its davits on the starboard side of the deck. There are 8 ventilators and 3 steam pipes just aft of the funnel. The superstructure and fore mast are in the background. This is Slide 9 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Watchkeeping Officer on board the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) owned by the Commercial Cable Company of London from 22 January 1973 to 26 April 1973. The series consists of 62 slides.
