The photographer is standing on a searchlight platform on the starboard side looking down, aft and slightly to port. 3 crewman are standing on the port side of the cable repeater which is being fed along the chute towards the stern sheave. The repeater has the word 'R23' painted in white on the side. 2 more crewmen are in the background on the starboard side near the stern sheave. This is Slide 36 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Watchkeeping Officer on board the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) owned by the Commercial Cable Company of London from 22 January 1973 to 26 April 1973. The series consists of 62 slides.
