A view of a cable repeater at the aft end of the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) at sea. The photographer is standing on a searchlight platform on the starboard side looking down, aft and slightly to port. Three crewman are standing on the port side of the cable repeater which is being fed along the chute towards the stern sheave. The repeater has the word 'R23' painted in white on the side. Two more crewmen are in the background on the starboard side near the stern sheave.
