A view of a cable repeater at the aft end of the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) at sea. The photographer is standing on a searchlight platform on the starboard side looking down, aft and slightly to port. Four crewman and the captain of the vessel are standing on the port side of the ship watching the cable repeater being fed along the chute towards the stern sheave. The repeater has the word 'R23' painted in white on the side. According to the photographer's biography, the captain's surname is Harper. This is Slide 37 of a series of slides detailing Captain H. Bird's service as Watchkeeping Officer on board the cable ship John W. Mackay (1922) owned by the Commercial Cable Company of London from 22 January 1973 to 26 April 1973. The series consists of 62 slides.
