Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Medal for Gallantry to William Lewis, awarded in 1855 and 1856

Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Medal for Gallantry, with its original case (see ZBA9687.1). Obverse: Head of King George IV (left). Lengend outer: ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECKS 1824. Legend inner: GEORGE THE FORTH PATRON. Reverse: Three men in a boat pulling a fourth out of the water, a broken spar below. Legend: 'LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP'. Suspended by a bar attached to two dolphins from a medium blue ribbon with an inscribed silver bar. The words 'Mr William Lewis voted 1st Feb'y 1855' are engraved on the rim of the medal.

This medal was awarded to William Lewis (1815-1871) master of the cutter 'Tryall' for his efforts in saving the crew of the North Shields brig Staunton in February 1855. The second service clasp was added for his efforts in saving the of the sloop 'Maria' in September 1856.
