Commemorative plaque awarded to William Lewis by the Shipwrecked Fisherman and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society
Commemorative plaque that bears a similar inscription to the The Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society silver medal. Inscription: 'PRESENTED FOR HEROIC EXERTIONS IN SAVING LIFE FROM DROWNING. W. LEWIS 1851.
This plaque was awarded to William Lewis (1815-1871) master mariner of the cutter 'Tryall' for his efforts in rescuing the crew of the French brig Etoile de la Mer which had run aground on the Longsand, in the North Sea off the coast of Essex, United Kingdom. in 1851. There is evidence of corrosion around the bottom area of the plaque.
