An elevated port stern quarter view of an unnamed Mounts Bay pilot gig reaching on a port tack out of Penzance harbour. Both the standing lug foresail and mizzen are equipped with booms. Aboard are a pilot, helmsman, and crew in the bows, apparently shipping a sweep or 'paddle'. Just beyond the harbour mouth are a circa 18ft rowing vessel with five rowers, three standing men and cargo visible, and towed by this boat, another, circa 12ft punt heavily laden with unidentified cargo and three men aboard. Beyond these a circa 65ft gaff cutter is seen port beam on, sails stowed, at anchor. Beyond the cutter's bowsprit, a more distant pilot gig is approaching the harbour under sail.
