Leigh-on-Sea
A bawley is shown moored, from the port side, with bowsprit extended outboard and boom and gaff lowered with the mainsail laced to them. The jaws of the boom and gaff are hoisted higher up the mast than they would be if the bawley were under sail, to facilitate access to the hold and deck space amidships. Throat and peak halyards are divided near the boom with blocks. The bulwark plank leaves the traditional gap to drain water from the deck. In the foreground seen from their starboard stern quarters are two rowing boats and between them a sailing boat of ca. 18ft with mast and foredeck. The stern of another bawley is shown moored to the left of the photograph's main subject.
