Leigh-on-Sea

A bawley regd. LO54 is shown moored, viewed from just astern of amidships on the port side, although the last numeral of the registration is obscured by the port shrouds. As in other photographs from this set of negatives of Leigh-on-Sea bawleys, the jaws of the boom and gaff are hoisted higher up the mast than they would be if the bawley were under sail, to facilitate access to the hold and deck space amidships. A rowing boat is moored to port, and just the bowsprit of a bawley moored astern is visible. The shrouds bear wooden plates some 4-5ft above deck.
