Leigh-on-Sea
A bawley with no registration number visible, probably L054 as shown in negative P74966, is seen moored from a high vantage point, probably the harbour wall, from astern of the port beam. As in other photographs from this set of Leigh-on-Sea bawleys, the jaws of the boom and gaff are hoisted higher up the mast than they would be if the bawley were under sail, to facilitate access to the hold and deck space amidships. In this case, part of the boat's net is drying on the lowered spars. Astern, also on a mooring or at anchor, is a trading ketch of some 70ft LOD or more, equipped with a wheelhouse for the helmsman.
