"Peter" boat at Gillingham, Kent
See from a vantage point above its starboard stern quarter is a ca. 18ft double-ended peter boat from whose mast hang drying nets. Rowlocks on the gunwales are approx. amidships. The boat is three-quarter decked. Aft of amidships is the cover of its 'keddle' or wet fish hold. The apparatus at the stern to which mooring ropes are fastened is hard to make out. Among many vessels in the crowded harbour, a motor launch to the left has a large cabin forward with a steering wheel mounted at its aft end, while five converted clinker-built ships' lifeboats have large cabin superstructures added.
