The Deal galley shown in this image is seen from above the bow, looking over five thwarts ahead of the sternsheets, the first of these bearing a mast step. Oars and spars are laid fore and aft on the thwarts. Behind the boat, which is on chocks on hard standing above Deal's shingle beach, is a pub, whose sign is indecipherable in the negative.
