Walmer galley
The Walmer galley shown in this photograph has not been identified. The boat is seen from the starboard stern quarter, resting on shingle on Walmer beach facing seaward. The boat equals or exceeds the 22' 6" length of the Happy-Go-Lucky. Judging by the broken middle starboard wooden rowlock, this galley may have been out of use when photographed. Damage has been sustained to the starboard topside planking near the bows, but a repair has apparently been effected with the aid of a piece of timber which has strengthened the section without restoring its shape. A foot or so ahead of the stern a loop of chain is attached to the keel, which is hooked to the winch chains or wires used to haul such boats up the steep shingle beaches of Deal and Walmer.
