Folkestone aux. luggers

The Folkestone lugger Happy Return (reg. FE5) is viewed from ca. 50ft from its starboard stern quarter, on legs on the sand of Folkestone harbour at low tide. A man with a broom at the starboard bow is scrubbing the hull below the waterline. Main and mizzen masts and bumkin are rigged. To the right is seen the stern of a heavily-built rowing punt of some 12ft. The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft records that the Happy Return was built in Cornwall and was typical of Cornish luggers of the period built east of the Lizard.
