Rye Harbour "boulder boat"
A counter-stern, clinker-built Rye boulder boat (regd RX276) is seen from the port side, aground in Rye harbour, resting upright without legs. The gaff yawl rig typical of these boats has been unstepped. A propeller is visible on the port side of the keel at the stern, as is a windlass on deck. The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft records that Rye boulder boats were used to collect flints, locally known as 'boulders', from beaches for use in clay in the Staffordshire Potteries.
