Rye Harbour "boulder boat"
The view of the Rye boulder boat seen here aground, from close to the port stern quarter, shows the shape of the boat's counter stern, and a heavy beam supporting the stern end of the forward half-deck. Above this beam a small box on deck is joined at its forward end to what looks like a mast step, now out of use and covered with sailcloth. Immediately to starboard of the mast step is a hatch. A spar, possibly a mizzen mast, rests fore-and-aft on the foredeck and on the sternsheets aft. Galvanised iron rings at either side of the stemhead appear to be in place to support a bowsprit, although the second of these would appear to be redundant for that purpose. The length of the boat portrayed is approx. 20ft. It bears no visible name or registration mark. To the left in the middle distance lies an approx. 10ft pram dinghy built of few, broad strakes, and a mast tall enough to suggest a bermudan rig, with shrouds and forestay but no running rigging in place.
