Hastings luggers

The Hastings lugger regd RX94 is named as the Industry in The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft, in which a print of this negative is reproduced, as are the same boat's lines plan and construction details. The propeller visible to port of the deadwood at the stern confirms the fitment of an auxiliary engine, although the traditional sweeps are also visible, lashed to the port gunwale. The mizzen mast is raked forward; the Chatham Directory mentions the boat to be rigged with fore and mizzen lugsails, mizzen staysail and topsail. A lamp hangs from the mizzen mast, as do lamps on the adjoining luggers beached beyond the Industry.
