Eastbourne fishing boats

This view of the beached Newhaven-registered Eastbourne lugger Nona (regd NN66) is taken from the bows. The boat is heeled to port so the lower planks on that side are resting on the beach, with no chocks or timber baulks beneath its rubbing strakes. The foremast and partly-withdrawn bowsprit with chain bobstay hanging slack are the only elements of rigging visible. The square-cut shaft ends and turned handles of two sweeps are secured in a loop of rope below the port gunwale. On the shingle to port of the lugger are a fish or net box and nets, the latter apparently drying or awaiting repair.
