Eastbourne fishing boats

Three eliptical lute-sterned luggers are shown stern-on in this image, the Millicent of Brighton, owner H Leach, being the foremost, in the centre foreground. To the left is the stern of the Eastbourne-based Reaper, and to the right, another such lugger too distant for its name to be visible, with crab pots astern on the beach. The Millicent and Reaper each have single auxiliary engines with propeller shafts through their sternposts. The mizzen mast and iron or steel tiller of the Reaper are visible. The Millicent's mizzen mast is stepped, while the foremast has been lowered over the stern, and sweeps are stowed on board with their blades in the air.
