Shetland eela

This photograph, reproduced in The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft, shows, according to the editors, a Shetland eela, a type of varied dimensions and shapes, similar to the fourern. In this case, the boat carries a high-peaked squaresail with a tight luff, suggesting to the Directory's editors that the boat may be engaged in a regatta, as might the number of crew on board. The long tiller held by the helmsman shows how the design's fine canoe stern requires the helmsman to sit relatively far forward where the boat's greater beam provides more buoyancy.
