Shetland fourerns
This photograph, reproduced in The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft, shows three Shetland fourerns becalmed off Symbister on the Isle of Whalsay, with oars ready in case of need. The Chatham Directory editors note that unlike dipping lugsails, these fourerns' square sails are set outside rather than inside the shrouds; although many dipping luggers used the main halyard fastened to windward as their only 'shroud'.
