Morecambe Bay shrimper SM100 at Newhaven

This view of a Morecambe Bay shrimper regd SM100 shows it aground on legs in Newhaven harbour, viewed from a distance of some 3m just forward of amidships. The view confirms the pronounced cutaway of the bow section of the boat's keel, which only reaches its full depth just forward of the mast. On deck a low, pitch-roofed cuddy is covered by canvas hanging over the boom, while hoops which secure the mainsail luff to the mast are in place. The bowsprit has been withdrawn inboard. A curved tiller is seen aft. In the distance the opposite shore is devoid of moorings or boats. One of the other vessels partly visible in this photograph is a beamy barge of apparent Dutch derivation whose name Victory and home port, Seaford, are written on its bluff, curvaceous stern.
