Portsmouth wherry in Camber dock, Portsmouth harbour, stern view

This image is of a boat built with a transom is described in the Negatives index P.70000-P.79999 as being of a Portsmouth wherry, although The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft describes (Spithead) wherries as double-ended, two-masted spritsail-rigged workboats. The clinker-built 'wherry' in this image is seen from close behind its transom, afloat in dock, the view showing how heavily built the boat was. The boat is seen to be half-decked as Spithead wherries were, and one mast, rudder and shrouds are in place. Two white-painted poles are visible, one vertical on the starboard side of the bulkhead amidships, the other resting on the top of the transom with a carving of unknown purpose on its end. A number of other inshore vessels are moored close by.
