The scallop boat Cymba (1893) in J.D. Foster's Emsworth yard (according to Negatives index P.70000-P.79999) is seen from above the port side of the stern, with the name and home port name (Portsmouth) written on the steeply raked transom beneath larger, more florid but damaged characters which may read 'JOS'. The Cymba, apparently some 45ft LOD, has three shrouds on either gunwale, a companionway and two further hatches forward, and boards above the gunwales on either side of the tiller, presumably to shelter the helmsman in rough seas. On either side of the Cymba lie similar-sized fishing boats.
