Emsworth fishing vessels laid up at Emsworth

This view of the oyster dredger Ostrea (1893) (according to Negatives index P.70000-P.79999) is taken from on deck, looking astern over the boat's port stern quarter. The boat's tiller is fixed to the rudder head emerging from the deck just forward of the counter, and just aft of a raised companionway with a sliding hatch. A raised section of the topsides at the stern is fastened to stanchions, and appears to be dedicated to protecting the helmsman from waves in rough water. What can be seen of the similar boat to the right of the Ostrea shows it to have a similar companionway in the stern to that of the Ostrea. It also has its mainmast still stepped.
