Dover galley Princess

The Dover galley Princess, beached on shingle facing seawards in Dover, is seen from behind the stern in this elevated view showing its four thwarts, the foremost and aft-most having thole pins in place, and the foremost having a post projecting some 2ft from it like a cut-down mast, probably used in lieu of a winch when hauling nets. The perspective confirms the galley's relatively narrow beam and the deep deadrise below a wineglass transom. In the distance in front of what may be the Eastern arm of Dover's outer harbour is a tug, and behind it, an outward-bound, twin-funnelled ferry. The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft records that the Princess was 29ft 1" in length, with a beam of 5ft 4" and a depth of 2ft.
