Eastbourne sprat boat Discovery

The Eastbourne sprat boat Discovery, ca. 18ft in length, is seen from above its starboard stern quarter, beached on shelving shingle at Eastbourne, with other boats nearby and fishermen's buildings in the distance. The clinker-built boat has the characteristic concave planked counter stern shown in small fishing boats of Eastbourne and Brighton, and a relatively shallow keel which allows it to rest upright without visible chocks against the below-waterline planking. Neither the boat's name, Discovery, or its NN registration are visible. It has no propeller, unlike the apparently lute-sterned but otherwise similar boat behind it. The Discovery's seemingly single mast is stepped at the foremost of three thwarts, supported by fixed shrouds to port and starboard, while a forestay is fixed to a short iron or steel rod bowsprit projecting from the bow below the stem head. No running rigging or sails are visible. A long sweep rests fore and aft on the visible port side of the thwarts.
