Fleetwood trawlers at Fleetwood
The Fleetwood trawlers Margaret, regd FD208 (right), and Harriet (1893), regd FD111 (left), are seen here photographed from astern and above, seen from the jetty to which they are tied up. An iron tiller rises from the deck of the Margaret, with a binnacle just aft of the mizzen mast. The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft records that the Harriet, regd FD111, was built by Hugh Singleton in 1893 at Fleetwood and measured 60.1ft with beam of 16.8ft and a draft of 9.5ft. The Directory adds that by 1929 the Harriet had been fitted with a auxiliary engine. Its beam trawl was 40-50ft long and was hauled by a steam capstan. The image clearly shows the eliptical 'coaster' or 'tug' sterns common to Fleetwood trawlers and to shrimpers, prawners and nobbies of the North-West. The envelope of negative P76235 records that the Margaret was owned by William Leadbetter of Fleetwood in 1930, and that the boat had an engine.
