Folkestone luggers at Folkestone

A carvel Folkestone lugger regd FE46 is seen from the starboard side, beached, and heeled slightly to port. The image shows the boat's full, deep hull shape, with a fine forefoot, and a long eliptical lute stern, from which extends a square steel spade rudder, beneath which is what appears to be a propeller shaft. The lugger is approx. 35ft long, as were the majority of Folkestone luggers, according to the Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft. Fore- and mizzen masts are stepped, and those of the adjacent lugger behind FE46 are also visible. The bumkins of each boat are also in place. On the beach ahead of FE46 is the transom of a smaller clinker-built boat, on which are painted its name, the Alert, and its home port of Hythe.
