Folkestone luggers at Folkestone

A carvel Folkestone lugger regd FE90 is shown beached near a Folkestone harbour wall, photographed from the beach to port of the boat, which is approx. 35ft long, as were the majority of Folkestone luggers, according to the Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft. The lugger's rudder has been withdrawn and it has no visible propeller. Only the mizzen mast is stepped, the foremast or gaff being laid fore and aft against the starboard gunwale. The tabernacle for the foremast appears to be reinforced by curved timbers descending from its top to the deck behind it. A bumkin about 16ft long extends from the mizzen mast, which is stepped over the sternpost, far forward of the stern.
