Folkestone luggers at Folkestone

The carvel Folkestone lugger Happy Return, regd FE5, is shown heeled to starboard and towards the camera, aground in Folkestone harbour with the water level half-way between the waterline and keel. It has a transom stern. The dipping lug foresail laced to its yard is laid on deck, and the mizzen likewise laced to its yard is secured vertically to the mizzen mast. Extending from the latter to some 16ft aft of the transom is the bumkin to which the mizzen is sheeted when under way. On deck is the hatch of the fish hold amidships, and just forward of the mizzen mast, the companionway leading to the crew's cabin. The sterns of two similar luggers are visible beyond the Happy Return to the right of the image.
