St Ives pilchard drivers at Newlyn under aux. sail
A transom-sterned pilchard driver of some 35ft regd SS12 is seen from off its port stern quarter, about to round the end of the pier at the harbour mouth of Newlyn, on a port reach. It has a dipping lug foresail and standing lug mizzen, and has two crew and the helmsman aboard. Ahead of it just beyond the pier is a double-ended lugger of similar size, whose dipping lug foresail yard is hoisted to windward of its foremast, perhaps in preparation for a gybe once clear of the harbour.
