St Ives pilchard drivers at Newlyn under aux. sail
A double-ended St Ives pilchard driver, the Joseph, regd SS77, is seen close up from off its port stern quarter, sailing on a port reach out of Newlyn harbour, under foresail and mizzen, in a light wind. The foresail yard is hoisted to windward of the mast, perhaps in preparation for a gybe once clear of the harbour. The helmsman faces away from the camera. The legs of a crew member are visible to leeward of the foresail.
