Studio photograph of a South Asian woman, probably an ayah, with a European child
A black and white portrait photograph of a standing South Asian woman with a seated European child. The woman is almost certainly an ayah (a South Asian nanny). She is dressed in a checked blouse and a sari-like garment tied over one shoulder. The boy is dressed in a long gown with a collar, knee-length socks and black shoes. 'Fairweather' and 'St Andrews' appear on the mount
The reference to St Andrews suggests the woman may have travelled from somewhere in South Asia to Scotland during the course of her employment. Ayahs were one of many groups of South Asian migrants who stayed or settled in Britain as a result of the colonisation of the Indian subcontinent.
This photograph may have been produced at the studio of John Fairweather (active 1890-1920). He is best known for golf photographs but his studio also produced many portraits, including photographs featuring children.
