A group of Indian and British soldiers

A black and white landscape photograph of 51 uniformed Indian and British soldiers posting for formal group portrait. At the front three men sit on the floor followed then a row of nine seated men and then five rows of men standing behind them, probably on steps. Most of the men have sheathed swords; some are also holding long batons and, in one case, a cane. Some wear knee-high boots, other puttees. Almost all of the men have beards or moustaches. All but one of the Indian soldiers wears a turban or a tasselled, shako-like hat and most wear shoulder belt over a military tunic. The four British men sit on the front row. All are bareheaded but have pith helmets on their laps or at their feet. A striped mat can be seen underneath the group and the ground floor of building is visible behind them; this has shuttered windows or doors and a shallow canopy with an ornamental fringe and a hanging plant on its right side.
