Sannomiya Street, Kobe
A colourised landscape photograph of the intersection of two Japanese streets in Kobe. One corner, visible on the left of the image, is made by a two-storey building. The ground floor, possibly a shop, has various signs in Japanese characters. The other corner, visible on the left of the image, is made by fenced compound containing trees. Driverless pulled rickshaws are parked in a row along one of the compound's fences. Various pedestrians, both women and men, walk along the street. One man pulls a two-wheeled wooden cart, one woman carries a parasol and at least two occupied pulled rickshaws can be seeing in operation on one of the streets. Several figures wear traditional Japanese sandals (geta). Telegraph wires run overhead, with several telegraph poles visible along the side of the streets. Original captions: (within the photograph) ‘SANNOMIYA STREET. KOBE’ and (beneath the photograph in pencil) ‘Japan Cruise Stp. 09’.
One of the signs refers to 'mikan', meaning orange, tangerine orsatsuma. Another advertises yuzu, a small citrus fruit quoting the price of one basket at five rin (one rin was 1/1000 of one yen).
