Four Andamanese people giving an archery demonstration to British sailors
Two Andamanese men and a boy giving an archery demonstration to British sailors. The four Andamanese men are standing in a line. The man furthest from the camera holds a bow in his left hand, his right arm raised, apparently having just loosed an arrow. He wears a short grass skirt around and a sash-like garment, also made of grass, over his right shoulder. The other two men and boy also hold bows and arrows; they wear loincloths and no other clothes. The Andamanese men and boy are all barefoot. Behind the archers are about thirty British sailors wearing uniorm and pith helmets. One of them has a pipe in his mouth, others carry walking canes. Most of the people in the scene, Andamanese and British, are looking intently in the same direction, perhaps at a target. The scene takes place outside, with bare earth underfoot and the branches of a tree above. Original caption (typed beneath the photograph): ‘Andaman bowmen’.
